The Smart Choice for Most Applications
The vast majority of pallet applications — general warehousing, distribution, manufacturing, freight — don't require a brand-new pallet. They require a pallet that is structurally sound, consistently graded, and available when you need it.
Used pallets deliver exactly that — at 40–60% of the cost of new. When you're moving tens of thousands of pallets per year, that's a significant line-item reduction without any trade-off in operational performance. A mid-size warehouse running 10,000 pallets annually can save $50,000–$80,000 simply by switching from new to used Grade B.
Norwalk Pallets' grading process is rigorous: every pallet is inspected for board integrity, block or stringer condition, nail pattern, and squareness before it earns its grade designation. What we call Grade A, your ops team will agree is Grade A.
Beyond cost savings, choosing used pallets is an environmental decision. Every used pallet that re-enters the supply chain is one less tree harvested and one less pallet in a landfill. With over 700 million pallets in circulation in the U.S. alone, the reuse economy is massive — and Norwalk Pallets is proud to be a part of it.

Our 6-Step Inspection Process
Every used pallet that leaves our yard has passed through a hands-on, six-step inspection process. This is how we maintain our 99.4% grading accuracy and our reputation for consistency.
Intake Sorting
Every incoming pallet is sorted by size, type (stringer vs. block), and initial visual condition. Pallets with severe structural damage, contamination, or non-repairable defects are immediately directed to our recycling line — they never enter the grading stream.
Structural Inspection
A trained inspector checks every stringer or block for through-cracks, splits, and delamination. Fork entry points are tested for clearance and smooth engagement. Bottom boards are inspected for separation or missing nails. Any pallet that fails structural checks is routed to repair or recycling.
Deck Board Assessment
Top and bottom deck boards are checked for cracks, holes, protruding nails, and minimum thickness compliance. Board gaps are measured to ensure they meet grade standards. Loose boards are re-nailed or replaced with matching lumber before the pallet advances to grading.
Squareness & Dimension Check
Diagonal measurements verify squareness within 1/4" tolerance for Grade A and B. Overall length and width are confirmed against the declared size. Out-of-spec pallets are reclassified or repaired.
Contamination Screening
Pallets are visually screened for chemical stains, odors, mold, pest evidence, and food residue. Any pallet showing contamination signs is rejected from the used inventory and sent to heat treatment or disposal. We do not sell contaminated pallets at any grade.
Grade Assignment & Stacking
Each pallet receives its final grade designation based on the cumulative inspection results. Graded pallets are stacked in grade-specific lanes, banded, and inventoried in our system. Grade is written on each pallet for easy identification during loading.

“We switched from a national pallet broker to Norwalk Pallets two years ago. Their Grade B pallets are more consistent than what we were getting as Grade A elsewhere. Delivery is always on time, pricing is fair, and they actually pick up the phone when we call. Best pallet supplier we've worked with in 15 years.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Real questions from real customers. If your question isn't answered here, call us at (203) 690-1396 — we're happy to help.
What is the difference between Grade A and Grade B used pallets?
Grade A pallets are in like-new condition with no repaired boards, no cosmetic damage, and tight tolerances suitable for automated systems and racking. Grade B pallets may have up to two repaired boards and light cosmetic wear but are still structurally sound for standard warehousing and shipping. The functional difference matters most in automated environments — if you are using forklifts and floor-stacking, Grade B is typically the smarter buy.
How much can I save buying used pallets vs. new?
Used pallets typically cost 40–60% less than comparable new pallets. A new GMA 48x40 pallet runs $11–$18 depending on lumber prices and specifications. The same footprint in Grade B used runs $6.50–$9.00. For a company running 10,000 pallets per year, that savings can exceed $50,000 annually without any sacrifice in operational performance.
Are used pallets safe for food products?
Grade A and Grade B used pallets are routinely used in food distribution. Our contamination screening process rejects any pallet showing chemical stains, odors, mold, or pest evidence. For FDA-regulated cold chain or direct food contact applications, we recommend either our heat-treated used Grade A pallets or new pallets. We can provide documentation confirming our inspection protocol on request.
Do you deliver used pallets? What is the delivery area?
Yes — we deliver throughout Connecticut, southern New York (including the five boroughs, Westchester, and Long Island), northern New Jersey, and western Massachusetts. Local deliveries within 50 miles of Norwalk are typically same-day or next-day. Extended-area deliveries are scheduled within 2–3 business days. Delivery is free on orders of 100+ pallets within our core service area.
What is your minimum order for used pallets?
There is no minimum order. We sell used pallets in any quantity, from a single pallet to full truckloads of 500+. That said, per-unit pricing improves significantly at the 100-pallet mark, and our best rates kick in at 1,000+ units. Small-quantity orders can be picked up from our Norwalk yard at no charge.
Can I get used pallets heat-treated for export?
Yes. We can heat-treat used pallets in our on-site kiln to ISPM-15 standards. The pallets will receive the official IPPC HT stamp after treatment. Note that heat treatment adds to the per-unit cost and requires 2–3 business days of lead time. For export shipments, we recommend starting with Grade A or #1 Recycled pallets as the base, since they have the best structural integrity for international transit.
How do I know the grade is accurate? What if I disagree?
Our grading follows NWPCA (National Wooden Pallet & Container Association) standards. Every pallet is hand-inspected and graded by experienced inspectors — not machine-sorted. If you receive pallets and believe the grading does not match our description, contact us within 48 hours. We will either replace the disputed pallets at no charge or issue a credit. We have a 99.4% grading accuracy rate across all orders.
Do you buy back used pallets or accept returns?
Yes, we operate an active pallet buyback program. If you have used pallets accumulating at your facility, we will pick them up and pay per pallet based on condition. This is especially valuable for retailers, distribution centers, and manufacturers who receive goods on pallets but do not have an outbound need for them. Contact us for a buyback quote — we assess on-site at no charge.
How are used pallets stacked for delivery?
Used pallets are stacked in bundles of 15–20 pallets per stack (depending on grade and weight). Stacks are banded with poly strapping for transport stability. A standard 53-foot flatbed trailer holds approximately 400–500 GMA 48x40 pallets. We load with our forklift and secure per DOT requirements. You will need a forklift or loading dock to receive.
What is the typical lifespan of a used pallet?
A Grade A used pallet typically handles 3–8 additional use cycles before requiring repair or retirement. Grade B pallets average 2–5 cycles, and Grade C pallets are best for 1–2 cycles. Lifespan depends heavily on the application — a pallet in a gentle warehouse loop lasts far longer than one subjected to rough handling in a cross-dock operation. We are happy to advise on the most cost-effective grade for your specific use case.
Frequently Asked Questions
What GMA pallet sizes do you have in stock?
We regularly stock 48×40 GMA pallets in Grade A, B, and C conditions, plus 42×42, 48×48, and 40×40 in various grades. Call ahead to confirm availability before scheduling your delivery.
How do you inspect and grade used pallets?
Each pallet is individually inspected by trained staff against NWPCA standards, checking for broken boards, missing blocks, loose fasteners, and structural soundness before grade assignment.
Can I visit the facility to inspect pallets before purchasing?
Yes. Our Norwalk facility at 319 Wilson Ave is open Mon–Fri 7am–5pm and Sat 8am–2pm. You can inspect representative samples before committing. We also provide photos for remote review on large orders.
Do used wood pallets meet food safety standards?
Grade A pallets meet food-adjacent requirements for most applications. We provide written grade documentation for FSMA compliance reviews. For pharmaceutical or direct food contact, we recommend our new pallet options.
