Top 7 Mistakes When Buying Used Pallets (And How to Avoid Them)

Used pallets are a smart buy for most businesses. But not all used pallets are created equal, and not all suppliers operate the same way. Here are the seven most common mistakes we see — and how to avoid them.

1. Not Specifying Grade

Asking for "used pallets" without specifying a grade is like asking for "a car" without mentioning whether you want a sedan or a truck. Always specify the grade you need. Grade A for customer-facing shipments, Grade B for standard warehouse use, Grade C for one-way trips.

2. Ignoring Heat Treatment Requirements

If you're shipping internationally, ISPM-15 compliance requires heat-treated pallets stamped with the HT mark. Using non-treated pallets for export can result in your shipment being refused at customs. Always confirm HT requirements before ordering.

3. Buying on Price Alone

The cheapest pallet isn't always the best deal. A $3 pallet that fails under load costs far more than a $7 pallet that performs reliably. Factor in the cost of product damage, workplace safety incidents, and operational disruption when comparing prices.

4. Not Inspecting Before Accepting

Always inspect a sample before accepting a large delivery. Check for structural integrity, loose nails, broken boards, and contamination. A reputable supplier like Norwalk Pallets will welcome inspection and stand behind their grading.

5. Ordering the Wrong Size

It sounds obvious, but we regularly get calls from buyers who ordered 48×40" when they needed 42×42", or vice versa. Measure your racking, truck configuration, and product footprint before ordering. When in doubt, ask.

6. Not Planning for Returns

If you're sending pallets out with product, think about what happens at the other end. Can your customer return them? Should you use one-way pallets instead? A circular pallet program — where your supplier picks up empties — can save 30-40% annually.

7. Working with Distant Suppliers

Pallet delivery costs are directly proportional to distance. Working with a local supplier like Norwalk Pallets means lower freight costs, faster delivery, and the ability to visit the facility and build a real relationship. That matters when you need 500 pallets by Friday.

The Smart Approach

Buy from a graded supplier, specify your requirements clearly, inspect what you receive, and build a relationship with someone local. Do those four things and you'll get the best value from used pallets every time.
